Easter photoshoot

Last week Karen from Carbine Avenue created a ‘styled’ Easter scene at our little Townsville Studio. We knew the perfect models for the job… a photographer’s children!! Sisters Holly (16) and Violet (3) are Megan Marano’s girls and they are seasoned professionals at having their photo taken.
Photographing two sisters with a large age gap is such a joy, there was very little direction required from me so I was able to sit quietly and observe them. This is my favorite way of shooting, but often it isn’t possible because kids want to run off in the other direction – so I spend a lot in time in dialogue trying to engage with the children to keep them near me! Both of Holly and Violet love cooking and creative activities so the easter shoot suited them well.
Read here for our natural light shooting recipe: Because the scene Karen created was in organic tones I decided to shoot with natural light. Unfortunately just as the shoot began, it became overcast so there wasn’t as much light as I would have liked. I increased the ISO to 640 and shot with a fairly slow shutter and wide aperture. I used a monopod to steady myself with the slow shutter and also so I could switch between video and stills as I went. The light was coming from a window directly infront of the sisters, a open door to the right corner and a second window to the back right. I also has a large white reflector to the left of the sisters and the whole room is white which helped to bounce light around the scene.
From the Karen the stylist: “Like many of us I have fond memories of dyeing eggs at Easter time when I was a child. For me it evokes memories of a simpler time, when life was a bit slower and we had time to enjoy the simple act of dyeing an egg! With this little shoot I wanted to give it an uncomplicated, nostalgic feel and capture these sweet sisters enjoying this activity together. In keeping with the theme I went with all natural dyes for the eggs so that the colours would be more earthy and muted, and kept the props and background basic.”
